As part of a wider collborative multi agency regeneration of the Pimhole arae of east Bury, Housing stock was improved with enveloping schemes and energy efficiency internal upgrades. The front yard areas of these late 19th century terraced properties that present straight on to the streets were to be re enstated witha mixture of traditional ironwork and Yorkstone plinths/ paving as well as contemporary dwarf brick walls and new gate piers to re enstate the division of privacy and ownership from the street.
To realise the terrace is to be seen as a whole and not individual units which break up the visual cohesion, several uniform approaches were deliveredto each set of streets in the 'grid iron' layout that served tomake up the area
It was decided to give a contemporaray feel to the traditional material and forms by the use of insetting colourful ceramic tiles within the Yorkstone piers on certain streets that faced North and were therefore in more subdued light and deeper shade throughout the day and were retaining an unrendered red brick frontage to the houses, and then also used Porphory granite inlays on those gate piers and walls that faced more South - to compliment the soft vanilla render chosen on the frontages of the brickwork that had been selected to reflect this brighter quality light. East/ West facing properties were given a modern ' gothic' iron railing atop large Yorkstone plinth bases to make fuller useof the play of light and shadows across the footways that occurs in these facings throught the movement of the sun during the day. The landscape aspect was given over to seperate Tender and Contract which was again handled directly from concept throughsketch design to full specification and contract admin to final handover.
